At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced CoreAI, a new system-level framework that integrates local and cloud-based foundation models directly into iOS 20 and macOS 17. The framework automatically routes queries to on-device neural engines for privacy, or scales to cloud APIs for complex reasoning.

Apple demonstrated dynamic model switching, allowing Siri and native apps to transition from a local 3-billion-parameter model to Gemini or Claude when handling complex analytical tasks. The API is designed with strict privacy controls, ensuring user data is encrypted and never retained in cloud databases.

The announcement represents a strategic shift for Apple, embracing hybrid AI ecosystems rather than relying solely on internal models. CoreAI is available to developers in beta, with full integration scheduled for the upcoming hardware release in September.
